Tookey Farm
Tookey Farms is an organic vegetable farm nestled in the Russian River Valley, cultivating diverse and unique fruits and veggies.
Sammy Tookey grew up around farming, working his first job at the farmstand for the small organic farm his mom worked at. In college at UC Davis, he studied Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems, after which he worked on farms ranging in size from 2 to 30 acres. He found his way to Sonoma County, working for Coyote Family Farm, before deciding to start a farm of his own. When looking for farm land, he wrote a letter and posted it on community boards and mailboxes. Paul Bernier, of Bernier Farms in Healdsburg (also a FEED co-op farm), found Sammy’s letter and offered him to use extra space on their farm to start growing. Today, Tookey Farms still shares space with Bernier Farms in addition to another plot on the other side of town.
Tookey Farms grows a variety of fruits and veggies, but Sammy has a sweet spot for growing tomatoes and melons. Their warmer and milder microclimate within the inland valley allows them to focus on crops that are slightly different than other areas of the county. Working with FEED allows him to grow for larger markets, while increasing efficiency on the farm every step of the way. The sales and distribution work that FEED does frees up time for him to be out in the field farming more, which is where he feels is the most important place for him to be.
